Health Governance and Sankewitahasuwakon
First Nations Health Transformation is a collaborative process between First Nations partners, the federal government, and the province. The intent is to create a more coordinated health system in which First Nations-led health organizations assume greater control of the design, administration, management and delivery of health services and programs that support community wellness and address their health needs and priorities.
The spoken term ‘Sankewitahasuwakon’ translates to ‘Peaceful Thinking’ for Wabanaki People. Sankewitahasuwakon is the First Nations Health and Wellness Transformation Collaborative in New Brunswick. Technical support is provided by the 3 Tribal Councils (Mawiw, NSMTC, WTCI) and the Advisory Committee includes all 15 First Nation Health Directors, Youth and Elders.
Our Goals
- Better access and more responsive service delivery that meets the needs of First Nations individuals, families and communities;
- Better integration and coordination of services with the Province of New Brunswick;
- More effective and efficient programs and services to be achieved through aggregated health service delivery;
- Trilateral partnerships and reciprocal accountabilities where Canada will remain the funder and Sankewitahasuwakon will provide service and program delivery.
