Summer Student – Health Services

About the Organization: The Wolastoqey Tribal Council Inc. (WTCI) is a not-for-profit organization whose role is to provide capacity-building opportunities for its member communities within the traditional Wolastoqey territory in New Brunswick. These member communities consist of Matawaskiye (Madawaska Maliseet First Nation), Wotstak (Woodstock First Nation), Bilijk (Kingsclear First Nation), Sitansisk (St. Mary’s First Nation), and Welamukotuk (Oromocto First Nation).

Position Overview: Reporting to the Health Services Director, the summer student will support wellness initiatives with a focus on youth harm reduction and health-focused community engagement. The student will assist with engagement activities across Wolastoqey communities, including supporting the WTCI booth on the powwow trail, helping to update educational materials, and contributing to culturally grounded youth harm reduction programming. This role is ideal for a student with an interest in Indigenous health and presents an excellent opportunity to engage in meaningful work while contributing to the health and wellness of Wolastoqey community members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with developing, updating, and organizing health education materials.
  • Help prepare communication materials such as posters, handouts, social media content, and resource packets.
  • Participate in community engagement events, including staffing the WTCI booth at powwows and other gatherings throughout the summer.
  • Assist in planning, logistics, and delivery of Wolastoqey youth harm reduction activities.
  • Engage with Elders, Knowledge-Keepers, youth, and community partners to support relationship-building.
  • Undertake additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Health Services Director.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a relevant program in Indigenous studies, health sciences, public health, mental health, psychology or a related field.
  • Interest in Indigenous health, mental wellness, youth mental health, and harm reduction.
  • Experience with Wolastoqey communities is an asset.
  • Strong understanding and appreciation of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and kinship systems.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including comfort engaging with community members at public events.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with design or communication tools is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle with the ability to travel.
